Vinyl Sales in the US Hit Highest Levels Since 1991

January 9

In the week leading up to Christmas 2021, a record 2.32 million vinyl albums were sold in the US, according to data from Luminate. This marked the highest number of vinyl album sales in a single week since electronic tracking began in 1991. Sales were boosted by holiday shopping, with 46.7% more vinyl albums sold in the week ending December 22 than the previous week.

Taylor Swift's "Midnights" was the most popular album, selling 68,000 copies. Overall, vinyl album sales for the year stood at 41.891 million, a 3.6% increase from 2021. Vinyl made up 63% of all physical album sales and contributed to $1 billion in revenue by the end of the year, representing 7% of all music revenue and 12% of total units sold.

A study found that an appreciation of the "authenticity" and "warmth" of vinyl records was the main factor driving vinyl sales, while an emphasis on packaging and artwork was also important to both seasoned and new vinyl consumers.
