Pandora Strikes First Partnership Deal With Music Agency

September 11

Pandora, the pioneer in Internet radio services, have signed a partnership agreement with Merlin, the rights agency that represents many independent record companies, in its first direct deal with music labels.

There are likely be some really good benefits from this deal:
  • The artists will have customized channels, where they can communicate with their fans
  • Merlin, a global rights agency with more than 20,000 labels as members, will have access to data collected from Pandora’s more than 75 million monthly active users
  • Pandora will improve its relationship with the music industry (some of the major labels sued the Internet radio for not paying for using music recorded before 1972)
  • The revenue for labels that participate in Merlin will be protected, and the artists’ royalties will increase as the partnership expands
